A little piece of Thailand in the heart of historic Sandwich, Kent.
Who We Are
My Thai opened its doors in 2011 in the picturesque and historic town of Sandwich, Kent. What began as a passion for sharing the authentic flavours of Thailand has grown into one of the most warmly regarded restaurants in East Kent.
We are a family-run business in the truest sense — every guest who walks through our door is made to feel like part of the My Thai family. That warmth isn't a policy. It's simply who we are.
Our dishes are prepared by genuine Thai chefs with decades of experience in Thai and oriental cooking. Everything is cooked fresh to order — including our starters — because we believe shortcuts have no place in real Thai cuisine.
"The ideal Thai meal is an harmonious blend of the spicy, sweet and sour — equally satisfying to the eye, nose and palate."
We take great pride in preparing your meal and hope you will enjoy our wide variety of starters, main courses and desserts, which reflect the harmonious blending of our care in cooking with a wide variety of exotic ingredients.
How We Cook
Four principles guide everything that comes out of our kitchen.
Every dish is cooked to order — no pre-cooked batches, no shortcuts. We use freshly bought chicken, never frozen, and halal chicken and beef throughout.
Our chefs are Thai, with decades of experience preparing the food they grew up with. The recipes, the techniques, the balance of flavours — all rooted in real Thai tradition.
Thai food should be enjoyed, not endured. We're happy to adjust the heat of any dish to your preference — just let your server know when you order.
Our restaurant spans three levels, with discreet areas for intimate dinners, groups, and celebrations of all sizes. Everyone is welcomed the same way — warmly.
The Food
Thai food was virtually unknown outside Thailand until the mid-twentieth century. Today it is rightly celebrated the world over — and for good reason.
Thai cooking reflects a rich blend of influences. Traditional Thai cookery — rooted in Buddhist culture — centred on shredded meats, seafood, and fragrant herbs, stewed, baked or grilled. This was later enriched by Chinese methods of stir-frying and deep-frying, creating the uniquely layered cuisine we know today.
A true Thai meal is never about one flavour dominating. Hot and fiery dishes sit alongside mild and delicate ones. The goal is harmony — spicy, sweet, sour and savoury working together. Each dish is designed to be eaten with rice, savoured separately to appreciate the subtleties of its individual aroma and flavour.
Coconut oil and coconut milk are among the most distinctive ingredients in Thai cooking. They impart a smooth, creamy texture to a vast range of dishes — from rich curries to delicate soups — and bring the heat of spices into perfect balance. Both wholly vegetarian dishes and meat-based dishes benefit from coconut's natural sweetness.
The traditional way to eat Thai food is with a spoon, from a flat plate. Thais prefer not to mix their dishes, eating each one in turn to retain the subtleties of every aroma and flavour. At My Thai, we honour this tradition while welcoming guests to enjoy the meal however feels most comfortable to them.
